Unless you BOTH are commited to improving a relationship - it's a waste of money. My ex thought that the counsellor would have all the answers, and do all the work. We went for 10 months. When things didn't get any better (actually, worse. The counsellor wanted one-on-one sessions with my husband - and this led to resent) I threw in the towel. At that point my ex said "But I haven't started trying yet". Some things, regardless of counselling, are never going to change. If I had it to do over, I'd save my $$
References :
Im pretty sure marriage counseling will help, but make sure you go to the right people. Do your research. Make sure that the person that is giving you counseling is not 1. Divorced or 2. Single! because what can they simply tell you. Also, im a big fan of communication in a relationship, i think you should be able to talk to the other person and solve any problems without having to bring a 3rd party in. But in some cases that has to happen. Go to a church ( Which will be free) and i know for sure they will be willing to help you out a lot. A person with Godly values will for sure help you out to the max. But if thats not your choice, make sure you go to one that has goood reviews and not one that u will come out of there worse than when you came in! Also, if you are going to involve your children, family counseling will be a better idea. Good luck and i wish you the best and that everything turns out good! remember there is nothing that cannot be worked out! never give up on your marriage, especially for your children because in the long run they are the ones that suffer the most! GOOD LUCK!
References :
1...with the right counselor it can help a marriage a lot

2...it depends on the problems and how much work the couple is willing to put into it.

3...some counselors have a sliding scale depending on your salary.

4...the primary counselor might suggest family counseling

I think when a couple wants to save their marriage or make it better the right counselor can be the best thing they can do.....it's always worth a try.
